What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
One of the most common questions I hear—whether from first-time clients or those returning to therapy—is: What can I expect from a session?
The truth is, therapy looks different for everyone. It’s dependent upon the therapist, the client, and sometimes even whatever happened 20 minutes before we get together. That being said, there are some commonalities that I try to implement.
My goal is to create a space that meets you where you are. Above all, I focus on connection, because that’s where the real work begins.
The First Session: A Chance to Get to Know Each Other
Think of the first session as an opportunity for us to see how we work together. This is a time for you to:
✔️ Get a feel for the space (or how online therapy works for you)
✔️ Assess whether you feel comfortable and supported
✔️ Ask me any questions about my approach or what therapy will look like
At the same time, it’s a chance for me to:
✔️ Understand your background and what brought you here
✔️ Learn about your current challenges and how I can best support you
✔️ Discuss any logistics, like confidentiality, scheduling, or anything else on your mind
Therapy is about fit—a mutual sense of trust and comfort. Whether you are wondering about logistics (like confidentiality or booking) or something deeper (like how I can help), this is your time; we can discuss it all.
What Happens After the First Session?
After our first session, therapy unfolds based on your needs.
🔹 Some sessions may feel like deep conversations
🔹 Others may focus on strategies for specific challenges
🔹 Some will involve agreed-upon “homework”, such as worksheets or journaling
🔹 Other times, you may simply need space to process and reflect
There’s no “one way” to do therapy. My role is to listen, guide, and support you in a way that aligns with your goals.
Therapy is a Journey, and Taking the First Step is Courageous
Therapy isn’t always easy, but taking the first step is an act of courage.
I’m honoured to be a part of your journey and your story, and I will hold space for you with care, curiosity, and encouragement.
